Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment method with thousands of years of history and proven effectiveness in many diseases. Acupuncture treatment, which has gained popularity in Western countries in recent years, aims to correct imbalances in the body's energy channels.

Acupuncture is a combination of the words acus (needle) and punctura (prick). It is the science of treatment and disease prevention by applying special needles, laser or heat to the acupuncture points on the meridians in the form of lines in our body. Although it is often used for weight loss, it has a wide range of uses from migraine to intestinal diseases, from waist-neck hernias to depression.

Acupuncture is no longer alternative medicine, it is now included in the science of complementary medicine. As a result of the cooperation of acupuncture treatment with other branches of science, very successful results are obtained in many diseases.

Acupuncture was previously known only as Chinese medicine and was known as a treatment method whose exact nature was unknown. In today's scientific studies, its effects and effectiveness are better understood and admired day by day. Because in acupuncture treatment, no external substance or drug is given to the body. With the stimuli given to the acupuncture points, it is aimed to direct the energy circulating in the meridians correctly and to restore the body balance (homeostasis). By normalizing these energy deficiencies or excesses, permanent treatment of diseases is also provided.

1000 Points
There are 1000 points on the body (about 300 are used in treatment) and 12 main and 2 extra meridians connecting these points. It is known that around 3000 points are marked on ancient Uyghur Turkish sculptures. The localization of acupuncture points and meridians has been scientifically proven by recent studies. Diseases are treated by stimulating acupuncture points with methods such as acupuncture needles, electric current, laser or ultrasound.

Acupuncture is not only done by inserting needles into the body. It can also be applied to many microsystems such as the body, ear, scalp, nail base, abdomen, etc. and very successful results are obtained. For example, in ear acupuncture, different schools such as Chinese ear, Nogier ear, as well as needle or seed treatments can be applied. It is also possible to stimulate the meridians by massaging the acupuncture points with a finger using another method called acupressor.

Allergic reactions that may occur during drug treatment, drug side effects or patients' antipathy to drugs as a result of the failure of drugs to show the desired degree of benefit are the main problems of modern medicine. The superiority of acupuncture is that it can treat the disease by using the body's own means without taking any external substance.

What are the effects of acupuncture on body functions?
In needle acupuncture, there are subjective effects and objective effects.
Subjective (unmeasurable) effects
Mild pain, tension, heaviness, warming-cooling sensation, bluntness in superficial tissue or local muscle spasms around the needle may be observed at the needling site.

Objective (measurable) effects
Analgesic effect: Reduces pain by raising the pain threshold.

Sedation effect: During acupuncture application, metabolic changes occur in the brain. For example, in the treatment of Parkinson's disease caused by dopamine deficiency, the patient can be treated by increasing dopamine with acupuncture treatment.

Homeostatic effect: It ensures the normal functioning of the sympathetic and parasympathetic system and a regular interaction with endocrine organs. It helps to keep vital values such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, urine output, acid-base balance within normal limits.

Effect on the immune system: Acupuncture increases body resistance by stimulating the immune system. It increases leukocytes (white blood cells), antibodies and gamma globulin levels. It increases resistance to infections.

Psychological effect: This effect should not be confused with hypnosis or suggestion. In acupuncture treatment, the body becomes happier with seretonin and similar substances produced by the body itself. Even in emergency cases such as sciatic nerve pain, pain can be reduced without the need to numb the nerve. In acupuncture treatment, changes occur in alpha waves in the patient's EEG (electroencephelography). With the change in alpha waves, patients relax and feel more comfortable. This is one of the reasons why drowsiness is observed during or immediately after acupuncture.
