Prolotherapy

What is Prolotherapy?
Joint-related structures such as joints, tendons and ligaments do not contain significant blood vessels. For this reason, healing is quite late in case of damage to these areas. In prolotherapy, a highly concentrated dextrose solution is injected around the joint or ligament-tendon.

Thanks to this sugary serum, the damaged cells in the area undergo a regeneration process and healing cells migrate to this area. In this way, it is aimed to heal the injury in this area faster. In other words, the aim is not to stop the pain, but to eliminate its cause.

What kind of treatment is Prolotherapy?
The exact answer to the question of what kind of treatment method is Prolotherapy will be a non-surgical treatment method.

It takes 15-20 minutes, hospitalization is not required, and the patient continues his/her daily life after the injection. The patient is also recommended to perform the physical therapy movements given.

If the patient does not have a condition that requires surgery after the evaluation of the MRIs, he/she should be evaluated for application.

Neck and Back Pain:  Painful fibrositis in the back can be successfully treated with prolotherapy.
Knee Pains, Shoulder Pains: It can be applied in knee and shoulder pains where there is no pathology that can explain the pain on MRI.
Foot Pains: Heel spurs, pain after sprains, chronic foot pain.
Elbow and Wrist Pains: It can be applied in tennis and golfer's elbow that does not improve with other treatment methods.
How is Prolotherapy Applied?
The problems in the area to be treated and the planned injection points are determined by physical examination and ultrasound.
The application area is numbed with local anesthesia before the application.
Prepared solutions are injected into the planned application points. The injection takes 10-30 minutes depending on the width of the application area.
Depending on the response received from the patient, 3-6 sessions are applied. Session intervals can be 3-4 weeks.
What are the Side Effects of Prolotherapy?
There may be an increase in pain at the beginning with cell renewal due to the injection and the arrival of healing cells in the application area. Pain may continue for about 1 week and 10 days. Then the pain passes. There may be bruises due to injection, it may improve depending on the body structure of the person.

Which Patients Cannot Have Prolotherapy?
It is not applied in patients with bleeding disorders, inflammatory rheumatism and cortisone users.

What Should I Do After Prolotherapy Injection?
Ice application is required for the first 24-72 hours. Painkillers can be given if there is no stomach upset. It is necessary to avoid sports or movements that will strain the treated joint. After 1 week, movements recommended by the doctor can be started.
